Remembering 2004

In September 2004, Hurricanes Ivan and Frances hit WNC one on top of the other. What was usually about a 10 minute drive to work, took me over an hour. I thank God that our family was spared from the devastation but so many other were left with nothing. Here are photos from September 2004:

WHY ARE PEOPLE SO MEAN?

Why are people so mean?

My friend Amanda had Monica Trujillo Hall at http://monicatrujillo.com/1726/business-card-marketing-101 do business cards for her and they turned out beautiful. That's not the problem. The problem is that Ms. Trujillo used the card on her site with all Amanda's personal info displayed. Most sites that sell business cards just display a "shell" with generic info on them...not a real persons personal info. When Ms. Trujillo was asked to change this...that's all that was asked, just to either blur or put generic info on the card she was displaying, she responded like this:

"Monica Trujillo Hall September 16 at 10:33am Report

Seriously? OMG It's a business card, YOU ...GIVE THEM TO STRANGERS!?!

You know Mary, I have done my best, to stay away from Amanda, and the whole crew at SL. I did some work for free and I expect to use it in my portfolio. I don't appreciate you getting involved. I think it's rude. So please excuse me if you think the following is rude:

At this point I am really irritated by the pettiness. We are talking about Amanda I seriously doubt she has to worry about a stalker.

Please remove me as a FB friend and Ill do the same... Sorry it had to be this way I really don't need the drama and I am extremely busy.

. . . M"

Now...my friend Amanda was attacked and stabbed by a stalker when she was younger and she is, understandably, concerned that this person, or someone else, could find her information. If other sites can display cards without personal info...why not Ms. Trujillo? She claims to be a Christian too. Her response was not appropriate for a business person much less a Christian. I know I won't be using her services and will not recommend her to others unless, of course, you don't care to have your personal information posted on the web!

I pray that God blesses her richly, but I choose to "Boycott" business that have no ethics.

HELP FIGHT AGAINST ALZHEIMER'S

We're on the MOVE to end Alzheimer's!

The Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk® is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research – and it calls on volunteers of all ages to become champions in the fight against this fatal disease. Since 1989, Memory Walk has raised more than $260 million for the cause.

Today as many as 5.3 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease. Millions more are affected by the disease as they care for loved ones who battle the devastating symptoms.

Memory Walk is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Since 1989, Memory Walk has raised more than $260 million for the cause.

All Memory Walk donations benefit the Alzheimer's Association, the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research. The mission of the Alzheimer's Association is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

I have joined a team for the Asheville, NC Alzheimer's Memory Walk which will be held on Saturday, October 24 at 1pm. Every Memory Walk participant is asked to raise money for the fight against Alzheimer's. This is where YOU come in. I need Sponsors/Donations to help my team with this Fight. My teams goal is $500. That's a very small amount when you consider the life of a loved one. My Aunt Barbara was worth WAY more than $500 to me!!! Please consider a donation to my team as we walk for this Cause. Donations can be made at: Support "Mother No's Best"

Thank you for your support!

LABOR DAY MAKE SOMETHING MONDAY

It's starting to cool off here in the mountains of WNC so I've turned my attention to makeing things to keep warm. My Sunday School group was told of a need at our local hospital for blankets and other items for the "Mother/Baby" unit. Not "NICU" but the regular new born unit. Seems with the economy and jobless rate today many mothers do not have the necessary items to take their newborns home in, i.e. blankets and clothes. I've made preemie hats for the NICU for a long time but never knew, or thought about, the others. I guess with my unemployment status I've become more aware of others and their problems.

I've started making newborn (full term) size caps and here are 2 that I just finished. I don't have a baby or a baby doll to put them on so the teddy bear and cat will have to do. When researching what size to make for the different units I found a pattern that said:
  • A Micro preemies hat will fit a plum
  • A small preemie will fit a tangerine
  • A preemie will fit an orange and
  • A full term will fit a grapefruit
I made one for the Micro preemie and couldn't fathem the size. God blessed me with 2 beautiful, normal children and to try to imagine these sizes is just mind boggling. I want to challenge you to get involved, if you aren't already, in doing something to help those who are less fortunate than we are. Yes, I am unemployed, but God is providing for me and he commands that I "pay it forward" to others. He'll take care of the rest!!!!! Amen!

MONEY SAVING TIP

In today's economy everyone is trying to find ways to save money. Here is one that my Grandmother thought of over 40 years ago. Seems that it has been revived recently.

What do you do with all those slivers of soap that get too small to hold on to? I know most of us just pitch them and get a new bar of soap. My Mother used to save them and melt them together to create another bar but that was really messy. I like my Grandmother solution better. She crocheted a little bag that you could put your slivers into and still use them. You also got a wash cloth or body scrubber at the same time. So here is my "Soap Saver"!
You can also put a new bar of soap in it! Wash and Loofah at the same time!!!

WORDLESS WEDNESDAY

We live close to the airport and there are several restaurants in that area. Had just finished eating when I noticed this sunset and thought it was beautiful.
